1 Background
1962, after his first two 45 rpm EP, Alain Barrier released his first 33 laps 25 cm containing two new songs in addition to the eight already published. Among these, Whales on a text by Paul Fort.

2 Lyrics
The original title of the poem by Paul Fort is 's time that we would still whales, the first verse of the first stanza. This poem is taken from the French Ballads published in 1897.

poem in three stanzas of five lines each, with only four lines for the last stanza.

There are only two types of rhymes: rhymes
female whales, beautiful, lace, she held
masculine rhymes in oi: Cross, King, Faith, and then happy that rhymes with ... happy!

3 Music
It starts on a confidential tone, like a song of sailors, as hoists and ho Santiaaaano, then the style changes very quickly into something more conventional.

4 Context of the poem by Paul Fort
Since the extraordinary story of Jonah in the Old Testament, whales, huge marine mammals have good news and have inspired many poets The whaling (whale blue-eyed) Prévert sung by the brothers Jacques, Even whales (sometimes have big problems Love) sung by Dorothy, The frog and the whale , Pique the whale on the deck of Morlaix sung by Damia, Whale Marc Pinguet Mrs. Lawrence Pierquin whale, whale Pique sung by Christian Desnos The whale in the supermarket sung by Imbert, The whale flowers sung by Vincent Malone To laugh a whale sung by Stone Oak, etc. ... etc. ...

is an old sea dog who aimed at a young mat'lot, and it explains how things were going once the world.

hunting (or fishing) traditional whale is a practice that dates back to ancient times. The technique is to gently approach the animal that floats on the surface (she blows!) Aboard a large canoe propelled by oars and projecting the force of arms a harpoon into the animal for kill, then take it in tow. This practice, which presents obvious risks for sailors, was practiced, among others, the Basques in the Bay of Biscay (or of Biscay) and until recent years in the Azores, and even today two villages in Indonesia, and some Inuit populations Atlantic Coast north.

The creation of boats propelled by steam engines in the second half of the nineteenth century, used to search for whales on the high seas, the invention of powered harpoon, then the explosive harpoon, will help develop this fishery to the industrial scale. The number of outlets, weak before 1880, moved to 1500 in 1890, 10,000 in 1910, and up to 50 000 in 1930, and then naturally fell simply because of the dramatic loss of staff. So in 1897, the date of publication of the poem by Paul Fort, industrial fishing has already done enough damage along the French coast for the fishing vessels are obliged to move farther and farther offshore

In the first two stanzas of the poem, he refers to royalty, which places us under the Restoration (Louis XVIII, Charles X, Louis-Philippe) from 1818 to 1848. If our old sea dog was 20 years old in 1847, he has 50 more or 70 years in 1897. The dates are consistent.

5 Analysis of the poem by Paul Fort
The first verse refers directly to the close links between the royal power (the king, nobles whose Marquis) and the Catholic religion (a crucified Jesus, the Blessed Virgin). The combination of brush and sword, as was so well sung Jean Ferrat, helps maintain a strong and stable society, in order and morality ...

In the second stanza, we see a dawning social divide: the sailors, as all the lower people have faith and thus support the alliance of power and the clergy, but the elite would allow gaps and freedoms that are to excess and lese majeste (noblemen who spat on her).

The third verse sees us under the third republic, secular and anticlerical, with a president elected by the notables. Everyone is happy, and there are more great lords who hold or Jesus. There are more whales either. This poem suggests

hypocritical and irreverent as those are the lords of the kingdom, who spat on faith, caused the downfall of royalty, as the disappearance of whales ...

On examination, it appears that this poem is quite ambiguous: on one hand, it there is some nostalgia for the time of the monarchy, which coincided with that of whale hunting and especially the youth of the speaker, while the other hand, the author criticizes the attitude of the notables royal regime. But when Paul says that under the Strong Republic, everyone is happy, we do not know whether to take the first degree, in recognizing the superiority of the Republic of royalty, or if the contrary, very ironic insofar as the sailors have no more whale hunt, and are not very satisfied ...

6 Analysis of the interpretation of Alain Barrière
For each of the three stanzas, the first two verses are sung with subdued voice, almost spoken, on a confidential tone, as in a private conversation between two friends when you say things that should not be heard by opposing ears (the walls have ... ears!). Then from the third verse, the tone becomes animated and voice rising and growing. The last line finally is cut in half by a pause Was the Virgin /---/ and had the King , giving a dramatic effect. For the third and final stanza, And the president is /-----/ followed by a longer silence, and are more whales which is pushed like a cry of despair.

In his interpretation of the poem, Alain Barrière has basically met the ambiguity and irony of the poem by Paul Fort. Another hypothesis is that Alain Barrière has added, by its very personal interpretation, a dose of ambiguity and irony that were not in the original design by Paul Fort, but it fits so well with the text I was completely captivated and influenced by this interpretation ...

7 The words of the poem
's time we went even whales, so far
qu'ça did, mat'lot, mourn our beautiful
on each route was a Jesus on the cross, there were
Marquis covered with lace,
was the Blessed Virgin and there was the King! Time

we still went whale watching, so far
qu'ça did, mat'lot, mourn our beautiful
there were sailors who had faith,
and nobles who spat on her, there was
the Blessed Virgin and there was the King!

Well! now, everyone is happy,
is not to say, mat'lot, but we're happy! ...
are more nobles nor hold that Jesus,
there is the republic and the president and there are more whales!
