Audio clip: I will Al Cantara
1 Background

2
Poem Lyrics in 6 stanzas of 10, 8, 11, 8, and 3 to each.
The chorus is the first and fourth stanzas identical 10 verses.
This chorus is composed of very short to 2, 4, 4 +2 or 2 * 4 feet
The verses 2 and 5 are composed of verses longer 12 or 14 feet, with the same structure: 4 feet, 4 feet by 4 feet for every line except the 6th, two additional feet (country, madness here, friends, grandma, here, contempt, eventually, included)
The first verse of the third stanza has the same structure 4 +4 +4 +2, but the next 10 to have an irregular structure 2 + 3, 4 +4, 2 +4 3 2.2 4 4.3 3, 3 +3, 3 +4, 4 +3, 3 +3.
My love is an old term which refers to the beloved. This is the popular form of e deary, euphemistic substitute for lover, who comes as friends from Latin amicus . This term is most commonly used in poetry ...
3 Music
A very cheerful music, fast paced and for the chorus, extremely catchy.
This music is slower and deeper for the verses, or the poet engages in a critical introspection highlighting its contradictions. An end
very optimistic and hopeful ( All the violins of the world / Will play for us my darling ) accompanied by an orchestra of violins ...
Accompanying the song is very original. There are of course the classics clack-clack percussion and double-wap-doo-wa choirs in the background.
First whistled intro with a guitar chord is very original (Does Alain barrier whistling?)
The chorus is accompanied by a plucked string ensemble (guitar + banjo?) Type of music South America, punctuated by shots very serious tuba (the helicon Discount Bobby Lapointe?).
The third stanza is accompanied by a very jazzy, with trumpets (or saxes?) And chorus. one gets the impression that the orchestra accompanying the song decided to improvise and make a beef without asking his opinion the singer which continues on its side ...
4 The theme
is one of the few cheerful songs, even cheerful Alain Barrière. After the success of esteem Cathy, was the first popular success of Alain Barrière. However, this success is based on a misunderstanding: see below the two interpretations.
In the painful cycle of passion, we are at the beginning of history when our lover thinks only reach his beloved. The song is however ambiguous and does not specify if our poet and his mistress have already expressed to each other and aspire only to find themselves, or conversely, if the distance that has raised awareness to the importance that our POEE could have this relationship in his heart?
5 The interpretation of South American
But this Al Cantara there was in Mexico or elsewhere in South America, ... (My Life page 56) This fucking country
makes me think of Las Piedras , the wretched village Clouzot's film The Wages of Fear released in 1953, based on the novel by Georges Arnaud. Las piedras village crushed heat ( In the fever that consumes me ), is located in Guatemala, and Part of the film shows poverty and a small group of Europeans stranded in this cul de sac with no return ( But why did I come here to lose myself ). they meet regularly at the cafe run by Hernandez ( this damn country / Where everyone feels a little alcohol and madness ). These Europeans have fled their country and find themselves running late Las piedras , without the means to leave. Their ambiguous relationships are very well highlighted in the film ( Everything clowns around me / Are sadder than the cold ). At the end of the second part, Mario (played by Yves Montand) the only survivor of the suicide mission, returns to the Piedras thinking of Linda, the waitress in the cafe. At this point, I would see very well Mario singing in jubilation I will Al Cantara, after touching the double bonus and before losing control of his truck and crashing into the ravine.
6 Interpretation Algerian
I will return to Al Cantara, (...), sounded curiously into the corn in Algeria. disturbing whimsy that made me join the time of a song, those with whom I could find me if fate had willed ...
(My Life, page 54)
It should be noted here that if Alain Barrière has not done his military service, is a medical reason: he had developed tuberculosis during his last year of engineering school (My Life, pages 39 to 43).
we were in a war of Algeria and the army wanted everyone, including questionable cases. I had to go before a review board whose result was not purchased in advance. (...) These additional two and half years of misery, they saved me was that extreme accuracy ... So I do not know the army, but I very certainly have preferred that to what I had to live (My Life page 42).
Meanwhile, it happens in Algeria what is euphemistically called the events, and later the war. The settlement was based on two classes of citizens: the settlers and natives. And they began to revolt against the conditions under which the Republic kept them. The free and compulsory education, it was not for the natives ... After the Indochina war and the failure in 1954 of the French Expeditionary Corps in the Far East, consisting only of professional soldiers, France is in called for more use to restore order in Algeria. After a short training, conscripts will do their military service in Algeria and participate directly in the operation called pacification. For morale, but also sit for their propaganda, the government has distributed transistor radios to maintain contact with the metropolis. One consequence of this distribution and that the regiments were mainly composed of conscripts have not joined the small group of troops in the art that supports the generals' putsch in April 1961. Another consequence is known that the information did not listen government. There are also peripheral stations, more free (mostly Radio Monte Carlo and Radio Andorra, Luxembourg and other stations Europe 1 were harder to capture) and songs broadcast on ... Among these, I will Al Cantara where many of them found an environment very close to them ...
7 Al Cantara
In the spirit of Alain Barrier, Al Cantara or Alcantara has a English sounding and corresponds perfectly to a village name in Latin America. It contains the root English cantar which means singing. As the French suffix indicates ra the future. No wonder that word is particularly pleased Alain Barrière. I found several
Alcantara in the world:
a city in Spain (39.44N, 6.53W) old name Al Kantara

A city in Portugal (38.42N, 9.10W)
A city in Brazil (2.44, 44.28W)
A river in Sicily
A lake reservoir in Spain
Lake in the Northwest Territories in Canada.
The alcantara upholstery is used for sofas and armchairs. It is an artificial leather classified as non-woven products that exists in a multitude Colours.
In fact, it is a name of Arabic origin, like many English words (Almeria, Alhambra, Alcachofa) or even French (Alcohol, Aldehyde, Algebra, Algorithm, Elixir) beginning with Al or Al (short vowels a and e are often confused in Arabic).
There are many names of Arab origin in southern Spain, where the Moorish kingdom of Cordova and Granada has left many traces. For example, the name of the great river that runs through Seville, the Guadalquivir, comes from the Arabic Wadi el Kebir, the great river.
In Arabic, Al Cantara means gateway or bridge.
According to the usual rules of transcript, look Al Kantara. We then
Bridge Al Kantara and El Kantara overlooking the gorges of Constantine in Algeria.
El Kantara is also an Algerian oasis between Batna and Biskra, at the mouth of spectacular gorges.
The two Roman roads which link the Tunisian island of Djerba in the African continent are also the same name.
J e back of al Cantata could then be taken literally by conscripts in the region of Constantine, who would have thought that the song was written for them? This is a total misunderstanding.
