My old Joe

C004 My old Joe
Audio clip: My old Joe

1 Background
To save Cathy, we had 3 other songs produce an EP. Alain Barrière scraped bottom of the barrel and its product 3 songs from sketches that yesterday, before someone did (My Life, p50). My old Joe is one of those three songs ...

2 Lyrics
6 stanzas, 3 of 10 verses to the choruses of 6 to 3. The first stanza tells
return, the second gives the causes of departure, the third discusses the impossibility of forgetting. The verses
an update on the situation: the first I dragged the whole world the second As if everything would change the third I returned it's not for nothing .

3 Music
A music the way traditional music that cowboys of the American West were supposed to sing the evening before the fire ... In fact the traditional American music is very complex, such as folk-song, country, bluegrass, Cajun music, .. not to mention jazz. The simplistic view of American folklore, such as Sheila sang in 1965 in The American folklore is a very crude caricature, it is as if we represented all the French with a beret and a baguette under his arm. ..

Seen from this simplistic view, all the cowboys called Joe, and when must choose a name in the English style because it has been more chic, it will Joe otherwise Battling Joe like in the song sung by Yves Montand ...

four themes
painful cycle of unhappy love affairs. We are here at the end of the cycle. The great love arrived, and it went very wrong. Our love is so unfortunate that not only is unable to forget and draw a line under its past but refuses any possibility to consider is comfort in other arms. The situation is hopeless.

The road, Highway: Alone in the night you are stayed on the road / We will be alone on the path .

Sea: I have traveled many seas . For the first time, this theme of the sea that appears.

countries: the U.S. (the style of music, cowboys from Arizona), Hawaii, Russia (balalaika)

Friendship or more exactly the Compassionate: To feel that one not laugh every morning.

The senselessness of life, which shows through in the background.

5 Analysis
In My old Joe, this is not music or side folk who are the most interesting aspects. In Rather, the music catchy and cheerful hides a terrible despair and hopeless. True love only leads to the empty When I thought that was coming / I have plenty of all / Not knowing that it was poisoned. What then? Travelling to forget? We travel with her memories, traveling with his grief. And when we return is always the night.

Rest friendship. But not a full and meaningful friendship. No, it's a kind of last resort where the two friends were to deceive their respective solitudes. A sort of union of cripples life ... All this is not very exciting and one wonders what is the meaning of life, what is the meaning of our life when we were not able to prepare for its aftermath?

Basically My old Joe is a song of despair bottomless, you swim in the great depression and life is nothing but a black tunnel with no end of which side one turns. ..

They beat me

C003 I was beaten
Audio clip: I was beaten

1 Background
To save Cathy, it took 3 more songs to produce EP. Alain Barrière scraped his drawer bottoms and produced 3 songs from sketches that yesterday, before someone did (My Life, p50). They beat me is one of those three songs ...

2 Lyrics
13 stanzas of 3 lines, plus the resumption of the first stanza at the end of the song.

The first 5 stanzas are past. The next two
this. We return to the past
for the next two. The last four stanzas
are the future.

3 Music
A cheerful and lively music which easily retains, and returns you trot in the head the rest of the day. The pace relies heavily on consonants, especially the b and t beaten and w pal.

A very rapid rate of rock and roll or twist, that swings and makes me think of music as 55-60 years Be bop a lula . In his biography, Alain Barrier complains the wave pop music, but would it not forgotten that he has contributed at least once this song?

music is very cheerful in complete disagreement with the meaning dark despair of the lyrics.

four themes
justice, or rather the deep sense of injustice: They beat me / We did not deserve it / I've lied /

5 Analysis
The poet addresses himself first to They beat me, then a fellow sufferer And we beat you, before generalizing We did not deserve . This companion in misfortune is it real or imagined, a kind of double parasitic brain?

It is unclear why the poet and his companion were beaten. Authors appear nowhere blows: is there any other youth, older persons or even police? They are designated by a one more impersonal. And having been beaten, what hurts the most, they are not the moves themselves but the fact of having been wrong, just like the lie that the two companions were victims: the pain is completely legal here.

For me, CCET song is probably inspired by his youth in the school where a teacher imbecile and tyrannical reign was about to slap on the wrist (My Life, p24). Is it the author of his shots and lies? The is beating improperly and who is lying?

In this text, there are two metaphors that escape me a little, and even a lot: A path
topped with wool
In general, it is found on sheep wool ...
and
The sun goes down / is red, he is afraid for me
fear is associated with green (green with fear) then rather than the red expresses the emotion or shame. And what the sun could we be afraid? and why he would win Your faith and my candor ?

The last four stanzas 10-13, which are written in the future, I think are most interesting. Rather than directly seeking revenge on the perpetrator (or perpetrators) of strokes by applying the law of retaliation or giving him a hundredfold, the two victims prey to the Company that allows to produce such harm. This attitude implies a silent complicity of the community with the author blows. To cure the society of this disease that incubates, our poet offers put everything on the public square: the wrongs of the author blows, the cowardice of accomplices, the vices of those who know and do nothing.

And then, rather than seeking help from other people who can not be accomplices or loose, our two companions rely only on themselves, on their own strength, because the more injustice is strong, Moreover it gives its victims the strength to fight against it.
